A permanent home for Dark Elegy?

Passengers, Syracuse University, Victims of Pan Am 103By FredJMay 24, 20141 Comment

Dark Elegy might have a permanent home. “‘Dark Elegy,’ a sculpture created by Suse Lowenstein of Montauk to depict the grief of those, like her, who lost loved ones in the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, could find a permanent home at Montauk’s Kirk Park.”

Pan Am 103 Reading List, Part 1

Passengers, Syracuse University, Victims of Pan Am 103By FredJApril 18, 2014Leave a comment

The first books covering the bombing of Pan Am 103 appeared within appeared within months of the tragedy. Over a dozen others have followed in the 25 years since the Lockerbie bombing. The following reports and books approach the disaster from a number of perspectives. Some are forensic, some journalistic, some intensely personal. I’ve chosen…

Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives

Passengers, Remembrance Week, Syracuse UniversityBy FredJFebruary 15, 2014Leave a comment

A sweater, a journal, a board game, a ball cap: nondescript objects that, in a normal context, would warrant little attention. Yet each item, no matter how commonplace, no matter how seemingly mundane, carries with it a whisper of a life cut short by a distant tragedy. All of the objects listed now reside safely…

Passengers, Syracuse UniversityBy FredJDecember 21, 2013Leave a comment

Pan Am 103 fell from the skies at 7:03pm, GMT. Traci and I are in Syracuse today for the 25th Anniversary Memorial service at Syracuse University this afternoon. I’ll have more to say later about the person who changed my life when we return to the hotel.

Alexander Lowenstein

Today’s edition of Syracuse.com features Alexander Lowenstein, one of the 35 DIPA students killed in the bombing of Pan Am 103, and the intensely moving and personal nature of the material his parents donated to the Archives at Syracuse University. His mother, Suse Lowenstein, created the Dark Elegy in the aftermath of the disaster. Among…

“We are not stuck as victims . . .”

Anniversary, Passengers, Victims of Pan Am 103By FredJDecember 15, 2013Leave a comment

“We are not stuck as victims of our circumstances and we can look to the future with hope even if we don’t know what it will hold. We do talk about these things and it is helpful to have a husband who can have empathy for my loss because of the family that he was…

Kenneth John Bissett

1988, London, Passengers, Syracuse UniversityBy FredJDecember 15, 2013Leave a comment

“God is now enjoying the fine wine that is Kenneth John Bissett. But God should have waited until 101 rather than 21.” —Florence Bissett John and Florence Bissett adopted Kenneth when he was an infant. He appreciated their love, and hoped to reciprocate their kindness in the future, expressing those sentiments in an elementary school…

Remembrance is not a week for me. It’s a constant state of mind. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/katy-widrick/pam-am-103_b_4399711.html

On Research and the Ethics of Care

Anniversary, Passengers, Remembrance Week, Syracuse UniversityBy FredJNovember 1, 2013Leave a comment

This project has taken on a life of its own over the past 3 months; I hardly envisioned traveling to Syracuse for Remembrance Week as I laid the foundations of “Remembering Karen” in July and early August, nor could I have foreseen the wealth of information I’d uncover over the past few weeks. The result…

Of Coincidences and a Pink Rose: For Suzanne Miazga

London, Passengers, Syracuse UniversityBy FredJOctober 23, 2013Leave a comment

In the months before she left for London, Karen and Peggy Hunt had an earnest conversation about the nature of fate. Both women hashed over a question: do things happen for a reason. The context of the conversation was such that “purpose” could arguably be substituted for “reason.” Both women came to the conclusion that…

The following prayer, written by Reverend Dr. Tiffany L. Steinwert, dean of Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel, will be read in Washington DC, Syracuse, New York, London, and Lockerbie on the 25th anniversary of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.                              …
