There are a number of memorials dedicated to Pan Am Flight in and around Lockerbie. Perhaps the most well-known are the Memorial Room at Tundergarth Church and the Garden of Remembrance and Lockerbie Air Disaster Memorial, which is located in Dryfesdale Cemetery near the Dryfesdale Lodge Visitors’ Centre located roughly a mile west of Lockerbie.
There are several other lesser-known memorials in the village itself. These include the Memorial Window, a glass painting depicting the national flags of those lost in the bombing, located in the Lesser Hall in the Lockerbie Town Hall, a memorial plaque located on Rosebank Crescent where a significant portion of the fuselage landed, and the Sherwood Crescent Memorial Garden. The Memorial Garden marks the former location of several homes (13-16) that were destroyed when the wings and a portion of the fuselage landed here on December 21, 1988, leaving a vast crater and killing 11 Lockerbie Residents.
The map below shows the locations of the memorials; clicking the markers will bring up short descriptions of each site and links to pages with images and more detailed information.
Thinking of Karen Hunt, and wishing I had known her better.
I have learned about Karen from this site, and from her wonderful mom Peggy.
Karen sparkled, and was a beautiful young woman.
Hi Janet,
Thank you for the comment and for visiting the site.
I regret that I never had a chance to meet Karen, though I’ve heard many describe her as sparkling, as you have.
Peggy, Bob, and Robyn are wonderful people, and I’m happy to have met them after so many years.
